Hella's E-code headlamps are designed to the stringent European tolerance on vehicle lighting. Unlike US DOT headlamps, the E-codes focused the majority of the light out in front of the car with a razor sharp cut off that doesn't blind oncoming traffic. By eliminating the dispersed light created by DOT lenses and focusing that on the road ahead, these lenses can achieve up to a 400% increase in useable light while using the same wattage bulbs.

Now you may ask, if these E-code lenses are so great, why are they not legal for street use in the United States? There is a simple, but old (1950's), reasoning behind this. DOT lenses are made to disperse a certain percentage of light up and to the sides. This is to help illuminate signs along the road. Since most of the signs in Europe are self lighted, they do not have a need for this dispersed light and a more focused lenses is required.
